Mid July Sturgeon Fishing Update from Richmond, BC

Sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River is in full swing, and we’re moving into the heart of the summer season. While most of the high water from freshet is behind us, warm temperatures are keeping the flow steady and the river levels respectable. This combination means fewer floating logs and less debris overall – but don’t let your guard down. Large logs and snags can still come out of nowhere and put your anchor line at risk.

Dealing with Summer Current on the Fraser River

One of the biggest challenges during July and August is managing the strong current that persists in the Fraser’s lower tidal reaches near Richmond. Keeping your bait stationary is crucial. If it's dragging or bouncing along the bottom, your chances of getting a bite drop dramatically.

  • Tackle Tip:
Use 20oz to 26oz wedge weights to keep your bait locked down. In the heavier flow zones, you may need to go even heavier. Don’t hesitate to bump up the weight if the current demands it.

Understanding Tides in the Lower Fraser River

Fishing around tides is critical for success, especially in the tidal portion of the river near Vancouver and Richmond. Here's a quick breakdown:

  • Flood Tides: You might find yourself anchored and facing east as the river flows "backward" toward the mountains. That’s not a bad thing– current, in any direction, is your friend. It keeps your lines tight and pushes scent to waiting sturgeon.

  • Slack Tides: Avoid them when possible. The boat won’t sit well, bait presentation suffers, and scent dispersion stops.

  • Peak Outgoing Tides: These can combine with high river discharge and make anchoring a serious challenge.

💡 Pro Tip: The sweet spot tends to be just after slack or when the current begins to settle heading into the next tidal swing.

Current Bait Report: What's Working for Fraser River Sturgeon?

Right now, the bait situation is a bit mixed. The fish are opportunistic and will key in on what’s available in the system. That means now is the time to experiment.

Top Baits for Mid-July Sturgeon Fishing:

  • Pike minnow

  • Lamprey

  • Roe

  • Salmon scraps (non-edible parts only – heads, spines, fins)

In just a couple of weeks, pink salmon will start showing up, and once they do, the sturgeon will shift their attention almost exclusively to them. When that time comes, pink heads and spines become absolute gold. Be ready.
